Senators Curtis, Merkley, Cruz, and Kim introduced bipartisan legislation to expand cooperation between the United States and Taiwan on the development of unmanned aerial systems in the face of the People’s Republic of China increasing pressure on Taiwan and the PRC’s dominance in the UAS supply chain.

While recognizing the inevitable costs of ongoing combat operations in Iran, I acknowledge that the president’s actions were consistent with his legal authority. The War Powers Resolution of 1973 provides the authority for a president to respond to emerging threats — for a limited period of time. Iran’s consistent and increasingly disruptive behavior presents exactly the kind of threat the War Powers Resolution envisions. Left unchecked, Iran would continue to pursue its nuclear weapons capabilities, destabilize the region, threaten our allies, and imperil Americans at home and abroad.

Senators Curtis, member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Jeanne Shaheen, SFRC Ranking Member, led a bipartisan Congressional delegation to Taiwan to emphasize Congress’ leading role in the U.S.-Taiwan relationship and affirm American support. While meeting with top government officials, the senators urged the passage of the Special Defense Budget proposed by Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te amid increasing threats of aggression from China.
