Opinion: When Freedom Comes Knocking at Our Door

Curtis warns that recent U.S. actions toward Russia undermine Ukraine and weaken American leadership

WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator John Curtis (R-UT), member of the Foreign Relations Committee, authored a Substack article calling for renewed American leadership in defending Ukraine and confronting Russian aggression.

Drawing on his recent visit to Ukraine, Curtis argues that American strength must be guided by a commitment to freedom and warns that recent actions by the Trump Administration risk emboldening Vladimir Putin and undermining U.S. allies:

“These actions embolden and materially support a regime that is currently waging a war of conquest against a sovereign nation. They weaken international security, trade, and confidence that America will continue to act in support of shared Western values. I’ve long espoused the doctrine of peace through strength, but that strength—hard power and deterrence—should be wielded for the purpose of protecting and advancing our values, including freedom. Conversely, the list of tyrants who have exercised hard power in the absence of values is a long and tragic indictment of human failures,” Senator Curtis writes.

“The world is a better, freer place when America leads from a position of strength and resolve. Capitulating to an authoritarian dictator shows weakness and sets back the cause of freedom,” Curtis continues.
