Washington, D.C. — Today, Senator John Curtis announced his appointments as subcommittee chairman on two key Senate committees: the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (SFRC) and the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW). Senator Curtis will chair the EPW Subcommittee on Chemical Safety, Waste Management, Environmental Justice, and Regulatory Oversight, as well as SFRC’s Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues.

These appointments reflect Senator Curtis’ commitment to build consensus on complex challenges both at home and abroad, leveraging his leadership to deliver practical solutions for Utahns and the nation.

As chair of the EPW Subcommittee on Chemical Safety, Waste Management, Environmental Justice, and Regulatory Oversight Senator Curtis will oversee issues critical to Utah, including returning once contaminated sites to productive use, reforming the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and chemical safety regulations. These policies have direct impacts on public health, energy production, and regulatory processes that affect Utah’s rural and urban communities alike.

The SFRC subcommittee places Senator Curtis at the forefront of U.S. foreign policy in the Western Hemisphere, with responsibilities over matters involving the State Department, USAID, the Millennium Challenge Corporation, and the Peace Corps. The SFRC subcommittee places Senator Curtis at the forefront of U.S. foreign policy in the Western Hemisphere, where he will replace Secretary of State Rubio as the Chair of the Subcommittee. His leadership comes at a critical time as the U.S. prioritizes regional challenges in Latin America such as human trafficking, drug smuggling, and the influence of China, Russia, and Iran in the region.

“Utahns are frustrated by a government that feels distant and bogged down by inefficiency,” said Senator Curtis. “Through these new leadership roles, I aim to bring greater transparency and accountability to Washington, ensuring that we deliver timely and effective results for the people of Utah and all Americans. Whether it’s advocating for fair regulations or addressing international challenges, my focus remains on practical solutions that empower individuals, families, and communities.”

Additionally, Senator Curtis announced his membership on the following subcommittees:

Environment and Public Works

  • Chemical Safety, Waste Management, Environmental Justice, and Regulatory Oversight (Chair)
  • Transportation and Infrastructure
  • Clean Air, Climate, and Nuclear Innovation

Foreign Relations

  • Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues (Chair)
  • Europe and Regional Security Cooperation
  • East Asia, the Pacific, and International Cybersecurity Policy

These assignments allow Senator Curtis to address issues that resonate with Utahns, such as streamlining federal permitting processes and strengthening U.S. partnerships globally to promote stability and security.
